lmaelvx17Hey i need to know anything and everything possible about famous castles in Italy, Austria, and Switzerland and their rold in history and contemporary tourism. If anyone knows a website or anything that can help me please help!!!!!!!!!
Erik SchmidtWow, you don't ask for much.
If that's a school essay then I think they're asking a bit much. That could fill several volumes, but lets attack it from a basic level.
The role of castles in history is fairly similar, broadly speaking, in those countries as the rest of Europe.
To answer that I would suggest you lay out the general role of the castle, relating it especially to the feudal society. The web is not the best place to find such info, and I just don't search for or bookmark such sites anyway. Your local library should be your best bet.
The three countries you mention played an important part in the "holy roman empire" as it was called.

As for contemporary tourism, there are many castles in private hands, some of which are open to the public.
Most of the ruined castles play only a small role in tourism, and it is mostly the better preserved ones that are important drawcards, except for those in private hands which are lived in and closed to the public.
The most important roles of these castles in tourism is probably their use as museums of various kinds, displaying exhibits including cars, wine labels and history, armour, archaeological finds, military history and equipment, art, architecture, regional history and castle history(16th-17th century mainly).

Just be aware that I do not include palaces and manor houses under the term castles.

Hope that helps.

Erik

PeterIf you stick 'castles' into your search engine, you will come up with Paolo Ramponi's site on Tuscan castles. This is a good starting point on castles in Italy.
Sorry I don't have the www to hand.
MerlinIf you have specificc questions to a certain swiss castle, I'm sure able to help you. For general information look at:

Many more sites are listed in the COTW-link collections...
