conormac .... was looking for information on fire protection of castles, i.e how is wood or materials/linings protected????... cheers!! Peter I would have thought that other than a siege being in the offing .. none !
With the main fabric of the castle being stone, there was very little to burn other than the roofs. And as early castles (of which the main tower would have been in wood), were a last refuge, there would have been no reason to have a fire in them. Even in later castles only a few rooms would have had fireplaces, and the kitchen would have been seperate. So if that caught fire .. it could jolly well burn down, then build another.
Even with the Great Fire of London, the going thing was to let it burn out. So what if a few houses were lost ! Only with the Great Fire, it didn't burn out for some time.
