The easiest and fastest tactics were tried first and then the harder and more costly ones tried as ealier attempts failed. There is no specific process, and it all depended on the opportunities that presented themselves. You can't very well storm a castle in a swamp or dig under it, so it very much depended on the individual situation. Erik ------------------ [This message has been edited by Gordon (edited 03-12-2003).]worthless_surf I am doing a 8th grade english project (thank goodness its not a history project so I dont have to put the best info in)and I need to know the process of siege on a castle, and some good examples, like famous sieges. Thanks Erik Schmidt I can't think of any famous sieges off hand, but there were many sieges conducted during the muiddle ages.
The process of besieging a castle varied, but there are some repeating themes.
-trying to sneak in and capture it that way.
-trying to get someone on the inside to help.
-building a BIG siege engine, such as a trebuche, often caused surrender.
-tunnelling under the walls/towers and causing them to collapse.
-bombarding them with fire, stone and arrows.
-throwing dead people and animals into the castle to cause disease.
-cutting off the water or food supply and starving them out.
-storming the walls, sometimes with wooden siege towers.
-battering the walls, burning the gates, pulling the walls apart etc.Gordon A quick search using the facility provided, produced 51 previous mails which mention or give detail on seiges.
Here's four, if you want more repeat the search. http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum7/HTML/000710.html http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum7/HTML/000211.html http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum8/HTML/000025.html http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum8/HTML/000036.html
