Gordon Flags generally impart some form of identification, as national flags do, they represent the country they belong to.
Flags on castles displayed the colours or arms of the family who owned it. Each family had there own designs, and each individual within the family had a variation on that theme. The right 'to bear arms' depended on rank within the feudal system, basically if you owned a piece of land you could have your own arms, and in Scotland these had to be registered with the Lord Lyon, King of Arms. http://www.heraldry-scotland.co.uk/Lyoncourt.htm
