Not sure though, but I think these mechanisms were the canteliver type operated from behind the gate, rather than in a winch room.glittermonkey Could someone help me find a picture of a medieval winch room? I need someting to reference while I do my castle project for Architechture.... Levan I seem to recall that there are some decent working winch mechanisms at the "Castle of the Scaligers" magnificently located at Sirmione alongside Lake Garda, Italy. Peter The 'Tower of London' still has at least one in situ. And I recall one down at the small Welsh castle of Manorbier some years ago. Your best bet would be your local library. There are normally several books for all ages dealing with the workings of castles.
Peterglittermonkey All right, I'll look into that. Thanks Levan There are several diagrams in Sidney Toy's classic book, "Castles, Their Construction and History".
