Gordon Sad, me? Never!
I'm off to Malta next week for a fortnight of strolling about fortifications and archaeological gems of all sorts. Medieval cities, towers, bastions, prehistoric temples (the oldest man-made structures on earth these!), Roman and medieval catacombs, WW2 gun emplacements, it's all there. And I'll have some time to do some fishing between the trips.

duncan The holiday i just returned from was not as packed with sites as where Gordon is going.
I did manage to take a stroll across London's bridge and had a very good look at its innner and outer supports which are falling away, which is why it was dismantled in 1968 when it spanned the Thames.
It now sits in the state of Arizona's {US} heat after being sold to R. McCulloch who founded the city of Havasu and it's man made lake.
The sad part is, there is no truth to the rumor that a true castle was also brought over from the UK.
AJR Going away and visiting castles is a holiday for me - there's nothing sad about that. The more the merrier !!!

duncan Sounds like a good holiday to me, How long will it last and where are you going in Germany Fox?
Fox Atreides It'll last 3 weeks and we're going to southwest germany, near the border with France, and at the Donau too, we'll have fun!

Peter Oldest man made structures eh !
Now this could be the start of a very nice discussion.
I've never been to Malta (but I know a man that has). But I have the guide book. So I'm away to read about this Gordon.
Gordon What you need to read about is the prehistoric Temples at Ggigantia (Gozo), named so due to the massive size of the stones used in their construction. Latest datings have them at about 4000-4500BC, 1000 years older than the great pyramids, and 2000 older than Stonehenge. The Ggigantia temples are reckoned the oldest of the series spread throughout the Maltese islands,
other temples stand or have been excavated at Tarxien, Hagar Him, Bugibba (now gone)and Mnajdra.
The phrase I should have more correctly used was

Southwest Germany is beautiful. I'm from Australia and spent 2 months studying German in a little 12thC town called Staufen (1/2 hour from Freiburg). My room overlooked a ruined castle from the Hohenstaufen era. Freiburg also had part of a ruin on the hill if I remember rightly. Gorgeous area. Hope you have fun!
PS Of course there's also the beautiful Rhein and Mosel rivers with their abundance of castles. I've written about my adventures with Burg Eltz in General Discussion. That's a beautiful castle to visit!

Lili Oh, and Castle Stahleck is a beautiful castle turned youth hostel overlooking the Rhein if you were looking to stay in a castle. Highly recommended and the walk up to the castle is steep (of course) but exciting.

Some of the more lucky moderaters are out castle hunting while a few of us are left behind to work.
Fox Atreides Well, only had my short 5 day holiday but that was fun, though hard work too, I dropped a saw and an axe in the lake i was working in, I had to chop up a tree from a boat :-S...
For the rest it was a very sporty vacation :-)

Fox Atreides Hey people!
I followed Shellys example and build a treb myself, a lego one , it evolved from something that could shoot 15 centimets (7 inch) to something that could do the same but then to the other side, to something that smashed into the ground to something that could should about a meter far with normal contraweigth. I had to extra packs of weight to add on, with that i could kick major but. Then I built a lego castle, stuffed some guys in it, and started shooing, the result was great fun and lots of dead lego people , with normal weight you already had to hold the machine to make sure it didnt wreck itself (the weight was tremendous) with all the weight on frequent repairs were necessary
Best fun in a great time.
