We are designing a shield for our school mascot, a knight. We want to include a dragon. We are confused. Most clip art depicts a dragon with wings. We thought that only mythological dragons had wings. We know dragons are not real, but did medieval dragons have wings?Sincerely, Diane Boarman Patapsco Middle School

Well, whether they are medieval or not they are mythological. Most of the Dragon stories I've heard of, they could fly, and in most representations they have wings, open or closed. I can't recall seeing a dragon without wings, other than those at Chinese festivals. Take a look at the Welsh Flags at http://www.castlewales.com/home.html ------------------ 'Demeure par la verite' Visit; Gordon's Scottish Castles Resource Page

Both versions exist in medieval europe. Go to http://mitglied.lycos.de/dragonluck/heral/wap/wapvor001.htm for some weapons with mostly late-medieval origins. |

The term 'Serpent' was often applied to a dragon, but more so if they had no wings. A MYTH !!!!!A must disagree here gentle Sir's. Dragons there be ... a term used by many ancient seafarers. No dobt the last thing they saw before sailing off the edge of the world. |
