Hi
I visited Dumfries Castle a couple of weeks ago but found its a very "busy site". There is a square moated platform and what looks to be a motte over looking the river. I know it was built in stone, does anyone have a floorplan of this castle or can tell me the layout? Top site though, just what a castle should be!!!!!!!

The castle was destroyed in the 14th century. From this one would think that only archaology could establish the lay out, since when Bruce pulled it down he left little or nothing. According to Canmore, the RCAHMS database, archaology has not been able to establish the lay out of the castle, so I'm afarid you won't get plans. I'll mail you some data.

I've got the same problem, but if that's what you're into get to Kilsyth, get up in the hills and try Graham's Castle, that'll keep you fit!....oh and bring a hang glider to go back down....not your average motte.

Chris, you might find this of interest, as might all lovers of Dumfries and Galloway!
No floorplans, but plenty of historical text. http://www.dumfriesmuseum.demon.co.uk/dumfstory02.html

I'll have a good look at that, i've got Dumfries Castle on my site now, with a picture of the layout of the castle taken at the site but i don't think it's right. http://www.castleuk.net/castle_lists_scotland/84/dumfriescastle.htm
