From Mike salter's 'Castles and Stronghouses of Ireland, Folly Publications, 1993, ISBN 1 871731 15 1.
In summary Mike says that the place was once called Newtown The base of a sixteenth c tower was excavated in 1974 which is thought to have been destroyed by the English around 1588. This was when Sir Brian O'Rourke was executed for treason (he sheltered a survivor of the Spanish Armada).
Around the tower was a pentagonal bawn (small courtard). Two corners of this are flanked by a round tower and a turret which was later used as a doocot. There was a dry moat now filled.
In 1620 the castle was gained by Captain Robert Parke, and he built the three storey stronghouse, which incorporates the round tower and the gatehouse.
The castle was captured by Confederate Catholic forces, and in 1652 was surrendered to Sir Charles Cote. The last occupant was Parke's son in law, Robert Gore.
