I need good information about Crusader Castles for a highly academic (Ph.D. level) coursework. I've only been able to get hold on the Deschamps book ("Terre Sainte Romane" ed. Zodiaque 1964, in french) and Smail's "Crusading Warfare" (1994 I think) but I need more good and if possible modern bibliography. I'm particularly interested in the Crac des Chevaliers, Karak ibn Moab, Tortosa, Tripoli, Sahyun, Margat, Chatel Rouge, Chatel Peregrin and Safita (that is, the important ones). Good academic websites should be a good help, too. Thanks in advance for your help. |

You only have to post your question once.
For info about those castles try to get your hands on the book I mentioned in an earlier post ( http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum10/HTML/000062.html ). It's from the late sixties so not modern but very informative.------------------

What about Lawrence's book. Our local uni library has it, yours may also. If it's PhD level work, then you really need to get to the original papers on which the books were written. I've never gone to that level, but am considering it. Even if not published, the records of archaeological work are out there, you just need to ask at the universities. Most people speak English in Israel anyway. What aspect are you looking at? I was wondering on what characteristics you determine a castle's importance.
I would certainly consider Acre and Jerusalem castles important, as well as a few others whose names I can't recall at the moment.
I have been to many of the castles in the area, so I have some info on them.
Let us know what aspects. Erik |

Sorry, I'm just back from a holiday to Malta.
I'm not sure of the availability of this one outside Malta, but a new publication for this year is Stephen C Spiteri, Fortresses of the Knights, Book Distributors Limited, Malta, ISBN 99909-72-07-9.
This work is a revision of his earlier work Fortresses of the Cross. It looks in great detail at all of the building works of the Knights of St John, from Crac and the other sites in the Holy land, through Rhodes to the bastions of Malta. It also acts as an extremely thourogh gazeteer of all the knights fortified buildings, listing many that have long since disappeared into the dust.
The author utilized the authentic records of the Knights themselves in his research.

Humm, that could be helpful. Got Lawrence's book, too. Not very good from an academic point of view but has lots of pictures and the like which I was looking for too.Thanks all, but don't forget to tell me if some other good books appear. |

Let us know what aspects.As the coursework had to be done in a hurry, the castles I covered where mostly those that Deschamps ('Terre Sainte Romane') and Smail ('Crusading Warfare') covered. I had to base my work more on the amount of information available than any other criteria. The PhD I'm doing is actually on the architecture of the military orders in Aragon (Spain), and this would be a part of the introduction (so the constructions in Aragon can be related to those later on, in those few cases where there's similar features).
