I was told some years ago to visit "Pursley Castle" in Wales. I never paid much attention to that advice but am planning a trip to Europe in the next year and I am now curious if such a castle exists. I did not see it listed anywhere so I was wondering if that castle does exists and if so where? Any information would be greatly appreciated. MP

I appreciate all of your input. Unfortunately I have no other information to offer. When I was told about the alledged castle I was not interested in nor inclined to travel abroad. I wish now that I had paid closer attention. Ah...the mispent times of our youth. I'm sure ,however, that there will be plenty of non-pursley castles to visit! MP

Pursley !
I live in Wales, and have never heard of it.
To be honest, it doesn't even have a Welsh ring to it. Although a Marches castle could have a name like that.
Having said that, it would only be an earthern motte at the least.
No more clues ?

It appears neither in any gazeteer of Welsh castles, nor in 'The Country House Index'.

A search of streetmap.co.uk which uses the Ordnance Survey Landranger Series Maps, provided only one placename of Pursley in the UK. This is a farm just outside Shenley Hertfordshire, England. The map shows no evidence of a castle site sharing the name. Again the name does not appear on any gazeteer for that area, nor in The Country House Index.
I note from your e-mail that Pursley may be your surname. I can only re-iterate what I have said before, that not all families had castles, and even those that did, the castles did not necessarily share the family name.
It may be simply that the farm was named after someone with your name, or that the family took the name of that place as their own.
Nevertheless, there does not appear to be a Pursley Castle, or at least, no one has found one yet.

Hi Lewis
There is a motte at Purleigh, south of Maldon in Essex which is the closest to the name but on the eastside of England not the west.
Yours Chris

There was a Dursley or Drakestone Castle in Gloucestershire (Ordnance Survey Map Ref. ST 737980). John Kinross in his "Discovering Castles in England & Wales" writes -
Roger de Berkeley's castle was built here in 1153. It had a deep moat, but has since vanished, the material being used to build Dodington House.
