I've decided to do draw a castle for a drafting project, and even though I knew the shape and such of a typical castle, I have no idea how big they are, like so many feet by so many feet. Or even yards. I heard somewhere around 300 ft for an outer curtain and 200 for the keep. And if it helps, and I'm sure it will, I would like the dimensions to a large castle... something a king would have resided in. And if it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you give me a couple of clear diagrams of a basic floorplan for such a castle?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks ya'll!!

There is no such thing as a typical castle, especially if you don't specify the period or region. You should also give us some idea of what sort of castle(ie. hilltop or moated etc). A Northern European(lowland) moated castle of symmetrical design would be easiest to draw. Many castles are built with hardly a straight line to be seen, so it could get complicated. It may be best if you draw a specific castle. See if someone knows of one with dimensions, a good plan and lots of pics.

I have plans, elevations and cross-sections of Castle Levan on our website: www.castlelevan.com

If you cross-match the various diagrams, you will be able to calculate all the needed dimensions. Castle Levan is a typical 14/15th century Scottish Tower-House so may not have all the features you were thinking of including.

Three other excellent sites that include plans are:

http://www.castles-of-britain.com/
http://www.castlewales.com/home.html

Hope this helps
