Hmm, what do you mean by a "modern" castle? Seems something of a contradiction.Levan |

I beleive what ssej86 meant was a modern military complex, which instead of worrying about archers and seige machines, would focus it's defences against riflemen, napalm, and tanks. Unfortuanantly, there is no real method to defend against modern warfare methods, becuase quite a few types of munitions are specifically designed to peirce armor, or to burrow through concrete defences, In the Gulf war, many of the bunkers that the USA bombed were heavily reinforced concrete several meters thick. There is a record of a munition penetrating 7 underground floors of such a structure before it detonated. Sadly, modern munitions have surpassed modern defences. The safest interpretation of "Modern Castle" would be the NORAD center in Colorada, a reinforced bunker nearly 4,000 ft beneath a mountain.[This message has been edited by THE TIKI (edited 12-06-2002).] [This message has been edited by THE TIKI (edited 12-06-2002).] |

ssej86 - To give you a helpful reply, I needed to know what you were really trying to find out. However, the polite way of clarifying your question would be to submit it as a reply as a new item in the discussion. Editing your original message is like pretending you said something different in the first place. In asking what you meant by a "modern" castle I was trying to find out whether you meant building a folly, building a model (like many in the schools group) or building a modern equivilant of a castle (bearing in mind that most folks don't consider purely military installations to be castles at all - castles being lordly residences too). The Tike is right about modern military defences - most of them are totally inadequate against modern warfare. This is the same reason as folks stopped building castles in the first place - once the cannon came into widespread use, castles proved to be next to hopeless from a defensive point of view. Levan |

Levan, I'd like you to know that your castle is beutifull, I looked around your site and even mentioned it in a report I recently turned in (your site credited in my bibliography). But I want to clarify why I didn't make the distinction between residence and military complex. You see, there are a great number of residential castles currently in use with full modern amenities. Water-heated floors and all that. To point out a modern residence I didn't feel would be fair, as there are so many to credit the question would not be properly answered. A "new" residential castle would be like any manor or estate built in the last fifty years, with comfort and convenience as the order, with personal securities as a secondary concern. So I focused more on the defensive purpose as a primary, and in the modern day only military complexes and embassies are designed with a defensive posture in mind. And the lordly residence in the military complex does apply. Any permanant military installation nowadays usually has an officer of high rank, in place of the lord, in residence. The aforementioned NORAD center has several hundred officers in residence at any given time. And please, I am The Tiki, not the Tike. [This message has been edited by THE TIKI (edited 12-11-2002).] |

ssej86, I feel obligated to point out that Any modern castle complex would either be underground or ineffective. Perhaps you should look at designs for Fallout shelters. There is a massive underground complex for housing the members of the House of Representatives here in the U.S. that certainly is designed for living comfort as well as defensive purposes. Sadly, I know of it only from the "Modern Marvels" series on the History Channel, and have forgotten the location. Good luck :< )------------------

My idea of a good modern castle is one with an underground shelter, an EMP Cannon on top and a missile launcher. it should be equipped with state-of-the-art radar tracking devices and should have gun turrets (covered of course). It should also have a nuclear resistant shielding. It should be equipped with flamethrowers surrounding it and reactive shields. It will be protected of course by a gate with barbed wire and titanium reinforced doors to which the passcode will be uncrackable as it is a word and number, not simply a number code. This should give you an impenetratable castle for the modern day.------------------ Yours Sincerely, Zachary Voase |

We had this discussion many times at CQ and mostly with interesting outcomes. But what you're talking about here are not castles but modern military fortifications. I already stated that many times, but have to do it here again to prevent this forum from becoming a space for the discussing of modern warfare: The terms CASTLE in its real (meaning medieval) sense, and MODERN should not be combined at all. |
