I am 11 1/2 years old and doing a school project on the differences between castles and houses today. I need to know about heating, windows and security. How were the castles heated? Did the windows have glass? How were the castles kept safe? (I am a teaching assistant and am writing this on behalf of the child I work with) Thank you. |

Hello Cath. Early medieval castles did not use glass in windows only wooden shutters although later castles would been fitted with glass windows though generally only in the interior. Sometimes these windows would be elaborate stained glass Glass was very expensive. A castle would have been heated by wood burning fires. As far as security goes, castles were very strongly built, with high thick walls perhaps a moat and drawbridge a portcullis etc. Regards,Paul.[This message has been edited by Paul (edited 07-19-2005).] |
