Basically, my class is doing a role playing project. It's taking place in the late twelf century (1189) A.D. I'm a minor knight, and don't hold any of my own land. If anyone has any info. on anything (duties, education etc.) regarding a knight from this period it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Hmm, that's an interesting one. In which country or kingdom is your role play situated? England? France? Or the Holy Roman Empire under Frederick I. Barbarossa? Are you a minor knight from the country, from a city (they became more and more important just around those years, esp. in northern Italy) or are you at the royal court? Please give us some more details and we may be able to help... |

Alas, I'm no specialist for english knights in the 1ate 12th century. As for the education: Chances are high that you can't read or write. If you are a minor knight without any land of your own, you would at least have your own horse and a manservant. And you will be in the service of a mightier nobleman - a count or an earl. If you served him good, it's possible that he gave you some of his lands and maybe a smaller castle to look after - in return you will have to go with him to war (maybe even to a crusade). In these days, noble families started to wear their own heraldic arms, so you may already have one. Peter? AJR? |
