I am trying to find information on Downton castle, probably in Hereford England. My gggrandfather is said to have been head of the herds and a layminister for the castle in the 1860's-late 1880's or 1890's there.------------------ sweet4grease |

Downton-0n-The-Rock Castle (also called The Tump) is indeed in Herefordshire at OS map reference SO 427735 (about 4 miles west of Ludlow)Mike Salter writes 'The small mound has a depression on the summit with stone debris, probably the remains of a stone building of uncertain date' I've not seen any other source with more information than this. I think the castle has been very long abandonded, your gggrandfather may have been a minister for a chapel in the village but he will not have been conected with the castle since that would have been long gone. However, it may also be that Downton Castle is a post medieval house (a grand mansion) for which I have no records. ------------------ And as I rode by Dalton-Hall Beneath the turrets high, A maiden on the castle-wall Was singing merrily: The Outlaw by Sir Walter Scott http://www.castlesontheweb.com/members/philipdavis/index.html |

I appreciate your help in this matter but I've found Downton Castle. I was always told by my grandfather that it was a real castle but turns out it isn't. Downton Castle is a castleatted mansion built by Richard Payne Knight between 1774 1nd 1778. Knight, the grandson of an ironmaster and a clergyman was fasinated by gardens and biult the place for his own tastes in naturalist landscaping. It is located 5 miles west of Ludlow (thus it's often listed as being in Shropshire although it is in Herefordshire), south of the A4113. It is privately owned and isn't open to the public I'm sorry to add. I know that it isn't a real castle, but, if I can help another genealogist find it without a wild goose chase I'm glad to help. It seems it's just always been called a castle. |

Here are a few sites where I found info on Downton Castle. http://www.gardenvisit.com/g/dow2.htm http://www.gardenvisit.com/b/knight.htm http://www.hermetic.com/sabazius/knight.htm {Richard Payne Knight} http://www.gardenvisit.com/b/knight.htm (Thomas Andrew Knight) http://www.oldprints.co.uk/prints/hereford/10693.htm http://www.york.ac.uk/depts/arch/landscapes/ukpg/sites/downtonc.htm http://www.nal.usda.gov/pgdic/Strawberry/book/boksix.htm (Thomas, being left the estate in 1806, spent his last years there developing botanicals and traveling to London for meetings of the Botanical Society) I also found evidence that it it the present-day seat of the Clan Kincaid. http://www.alphalink.com.au/~kincaid/chiefa.htm [This message has been edited by sweet4grease (edited 01-01-2002).] |
