I am trying to find information on Downton castle, probably in Hereford England. My gggrandfather is said to have been head of the herds and a layminister for the castle in the 1860's-late 1880's or 1890's there.------------------

Downton-0n-The-Rock Castle (also called The Tump) is indeed in Herefordshire at OS map reference SO 427735 (about 4 miles west of Ludlow)Mike Salter writes
'The small mound has a depression on the summit with stone debris, probably the remains of a stone building of uncertain date'
I've not seen any other source with more information than this. I think the castle has been very long abandonded, your gggrandfather may have been a minister for a chapel in the village but he will not have been conected with the castle since that would have been long gone.
However, it may also be that Downton Castle is a post medieval house (a grand mansion) for which I have no records. ------------------

I appreciate your help in this matter but I've found Downton Castle. I was always told by my grandfather that it was a real castle but turns out it isn't.
Downton Castle is a castleatted mansion built by Richard Payne Knight between 1774 1nd 1778. Knight, the grandson of an ironmaster and a clergyman was fasinated by gardens and biult the place for his own tastes in naturalist landscaping.
It is located 5 miles west of Ludlow (thus it's often listed as being in Shropshire although it is in Herefordshire), south of the A4113. It is privately owned and isn't open to the public I'm sorry to add.
I know that it isn't a real castle, but, if I can help another genealogist find it without a wild goose chase I'm glad to help. It seems it's just always been called a castle. |

my g.g. grandfather was head gameskeeper at Downton Hall in the 1850 to 1900 time.I take it that Downton Castle was the place.His name was Thomas Wilmshurst and he married Ann Davies from Eye .My g grandfather and his siblings were born at Downton Hall.I would like to hear from those people with dOWNTON HALL CONNECTIONS WHO READ THIS------------------

There is also a 'Downton' somewhat east of Shrewsbury.
