Trying to find out any information relating to Prim Rose castle. I believe it was left to ruin in the late 1800's. We are trying to find out some information on the owner John Long (died Feb 6th 1861 at age 73, not sure of birth date). The town which is mentioned on the death notice is Clonmelsh, county Carlow. He had a son James Richard Long born 1841 (not sure of date) died Oct 18th 1901. His wife was Honora Clowry died Nov 18, 1908. How old was the castle, when was it built? We believe it was left to ruin in the 1800's but would like to find the location for our family record. Any help is most appreciated. (now all in Chicago)

Primrose Castle !
I see this has been up here for a couple of days and no replies ! Had a quick look through my source books, and nothing. 'Primrose' seems a strange name for an Irish Castle.
I have been to the area and visited Carlow itself. And this was with the Castle Studies Group, where we were given a talk on castles in the Carlow area. I certainly don't recall this name. It may be a secondary name,or, the name of a later house.
Regarding the names you have given, I'll check these out for you. But as I'm away for a few days from today, it will be next week.

Back from my break .. and just started to look again for you. I realise now that you spelt the castle Prim Rose, as two words. I still can't find anything like that, or even the town you mentioned in your e-mail !
There were the Earls of Rosse, I wonder if the name could come from this source ?
