A good book for those who want to trace offical records for their history in Scotland:"Tracing Scottish Local Hstory - a guide to local history research in the Scottish Record Office" by Cecil Sinclair and published by the Scottish Record Office through HMSO. ISBN 0-11-495231-0 £7.95
To be honest, the book is a reference book and as dry as a bone, but useful none-the-less - if you're the sort of person who likes detail, you might even find it inspiring!
The book is broken into the types of records held, such as houses and streets, house owners, builders and buildings, estates and farms, parishes, bughs, ports, franchise jurisdictions, districts, sheriffdoms and counties, roads-rail-canals, schools, businesses, and recreation.
The wealth and range of public records on each of these categories is simply mind-boggling - you might even discover the tax affairs of your ancestors. There are records to indicate if they were in receipt of public benefits, official offices, trade guilds, criminal activities, the valuation of their properties and much more.
As I said - a good starting point. I don't know if similar books exist for England or other pricipalities or countries.
