My maiden name is Sully which is a place in France (Sully-sur-Loire). Does one suppose I could be related to a Norman-French knight who came to England with William? Also one of the Abbots of Glastonbury was Henry of Sully in approx 1300. If anyone knows anything, I would be most grateful!!

I have no confirmation of your theory, but it sounds feasible enough.

Will check a few names for you, as anything is possible. But it normally gets rather complicated.
Whilst a Lord/Knight etc. may have the name of his origins ie Sully. Retainers who worked for him would also take that name. So if there were several John's in the area, and one worked for the Lord, he would also be called John di/de Sulley(s). Whilst John in the village may be John the Smith, John the Carter. All of which you no don't realise.
There is also a Sully in Sth. Glamorgan, Wales. Which is a more likely source.
