Ok, I'm really new at this. My grandfather Robert Cloyde Clendenin Sr.,supposedly inherited a castle in Scottland, but the stipulation was that he had to live in it. Needless to say he didn't go. At the time, he lived in Portsmouth, Virginia, USA. He died in 1970 and I really don't know anything else. Can you help me find my castle? I want to live in it!
Thanks,
Mimi

Wheels are a turning mimi .. give us a little time & we will see what we can see.
Er!
Don't upset the Scots by spelling their beloved country with two t's .. Scotland.
'cause if you make it there .. may make you eat Haggis for a month (or more!).

I'm very sorry about the spelling...thanks for the correction, I don't know what this Hagis stuff is, but I don't think I'd like it! Really appreciate your help.

Haggis !
Still working on your names ...
... and if you don't know what Haggis is, I'd look it up. I don't want to be the one to tell you what's in one.
No doubt Gordon will tell of us of the old Scottish tradition of the 'Laird' and the Haggis.
Sorry, there is two t's in Scottish !

Ah, the great chieftan o' the puddin race,
a shame that the poor wee hairy animals get shot like that! http://www.haggishunt.com/
Seriously, haggis sounds revolting in that it consists of the offal of the sheep, minced and stuffed inside the sheeps stomach then liberally seasoned with salt & lots of pepper. But it really is delicious, better than Welsh rabbit anyday.

Address to a Haggis

Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin'-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang's my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o need,
While thro your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An cut you up wi ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an strive:
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
The auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
'Bethankit' hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi perfect sconner,
Looks down wi sneering, scornfu view
On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckless as a wither'd rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit:
Thro bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He'll make it whissle;
An legs an arms, an heads will sned,
Like taps o thrissle.

Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies:
But, if ye wish her gratefu prayer,
Gie her a Haggis!

R Burns

Sorry, I'd need some clues as to the location of the castle, I haven't come across your grandfather's name before.

It may may .. but I can get W.R. at my local Italian cafe anytime.
Okay ... the name Clendenin seems to be very localised around Dumfries.
The only places I've found that the name appears elsewhere is;
1655 Dangholm
1671 Staplegorton, Castle,
1700 Staplegorton, Parish,
There is also a named web site at; www.genforum.genealogy.com/clendenin

There is a tower at a place called 'Stapleton', though this belonged to the 'Irvines'. It is now roofless, though it does abutt a modern house.
Any more info you can pass on ?

Don't know anything about the castle but I have to agree with Gordon. Haggis looks and sounds awful but is actually quite nice.
I haven't tasted Welsh Rabbit yet so can't say anything about that.

If it's Stapleton Tower, then I was there a couple of years ago and took a photo.
