I am looking for any information on a Welford Castle. Giles Welford, was married to first a Blanche Dunacy, their 5 sons were killed in the Seven year war, he then married Mary Adams, and to protect their son, William Adam, he was the United States, and this is where my family history begins. He was born in 1797. Thats all I have, any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Brenda |

Not a castle I've ever heard of. Are you certain that Welford Castle existed - or are you more rather hopeful? Do you know of any alternative spellings of Welford, and in which country the family originated? Even better, in which towns were the family based? You may find that any Welford family castle is not called Welford Castle - certainly as far as Scotland and Ireland are concerned, most castles are named after local geographical features rather than a family name. hi, yes i was told there was a Walford Castle, in Hereford county, and Hereford appears to be the area the Welfords came from, also someone has mentioned Totnes, just don't have a lot of info, curious, about the 5 Welfords, that were said to have died in the war, etc. Thanks Brenda |

Yes, there is a 'Walford Motte'. There is also a large moated site nearby. All that has been found is pottery up to the 14th C.
No family names are connected with this site.
Totnes is a well documented site, though the name Welford is not noted. | |
