For an insight into a variety of activities in the medieval period, including death, marriage, birth, plague, beliefs, travel, religious attitudes and life in general, this book comprises translations (with commentary) of original manuscripts and facsimilie illustrations from the period. Produced in superb quality by Weidenfeld and Nicholson at a UK price of £20, this book reflects life across Europe and beyond. I'm sure it will provide good general interest for many of you. Not much about castles, though they appear frequently in the illustrations. |

I've borrowed this book from our local library - it provides a multi-level insight into the life and social relationships of the people during the prime castle-building era. Personally, I think it's the sort of book to browse rather than read cover-to-cover. So, as the production quality is excellent (it's on simulated parchment) it's a nice book to have sitting on a coffee table! The book is apparently going into a reprint, though John Smith's in Glasgow have 4 copies in stock and deliver worldwide; go to http://www.johnsmith.co.uk ------------------ 'Give me the groves that lofty brave, The storms, by Castle Gordon'.
