Spent ten summer holidays between 1987 and 1996 visiting castles through-out Ireland. List of some worthwhile books.

Irish Castles and Castellated Houses - Harold G Leask - First Published December 1941 (Reprinted April 1986) No ISBN? - Dundalgan Press (W Tempest) Ltd.

The standard work on Irish Castles - 170 pages but until the 1990's the only general book on Irish Castles.

The Walled Towns of Ireland (2 Volumes) - Avril Thomas - 1992 - ISBN 0 7165 2474 0 (Vol 1) 0 7165 2475 9 (Vol 2) - Irish Academic Press.

Volume 1 is a history and Volume 2 a gazetter.

Castles in Ireland - Feudal Power in a Gaelic World - Tom McNeill - 1997 - ISBN 0 415 16537 7 - Routledge.

The Medieval Castle of Ireland - David Sweetman - 2000 New Edition - ISBN 0 85115 788 2 - The Boydell Press.

Both worthy successors to Leask - excellent books.

Castles and Stronghouses of Ireland - Mike Salter - 1993 - ISBN 1 871731 15 1 - Folly Publications.

Vital if you wish to go castle hunting in Ireland - although the Irish O.S. maps are often necessary to find tower houses.

Castles of Ireland - Brian de Breffny - 1977 - No, ISBN? (1985 paperback ISBN 0 500 27398 7 - Thames and Hudson.

Similar to Christina Gascoigne's book on British Castles.

Castles and Fortifications in Ireland 1485 - 1945 - Paul M Kerrigan - 1995 - ISBN 1898256128 - The Collins Press.

Castles of Ireland - C L Adams - 1904 - Elliot Stock.

An interesting book coving about 75 catles.

Andy:
As you have whizzed about Eire a fair deal. Do you have any idea on the posting from someone a short time ago. The one on a castle named Prim Rose, in County Carlow ? Have been able to find nothing like that !
