Does anyone know where I can obtain a comprehensive guide to the castles of Yorkshire. I note from Mike Salter's latest missive that he intends to cover the area, but such a publication may be a few years off yet.

Don't know if there is a good one. I have mentioned in another posting about a friend of mine who has done two small booklets;
The Devil's Logbbooks; (1995)
South Yorkshire.Giants in Our Earth; (1995)
West Yorkshire.
You will have seen his work in Postern (next issue an article on his home town, Almondbury).
Steve Sneyd is at ...
4, Nowell Place,
Almondbury, nr. Huddersfield.
You can write and ask him if he has any left.
He would also know if any other works are available, up to date ones that is !
Steve has even explored place names that may suggest a castle site. |

The only books i know are Cathcart King-Castellarium Anglicanum vol ll or for South Yorkshire David Hey- The making of South Yorkshire
I've obtained them and many more from www.abebooks.com

I forgot the best guide i have found, it is Medieval Buildings of Yorkshire by Peter F Ryder you can also obtain it from abebooks.com

Best book I've got for Yorkshire is Yorkshire's Ruined Castles by J L Illingworth - originally published in 1938 was republished in 1970 by S R Publishers Ltd - ISBN 0 85409 602 7.------------------

ISBN 095-197-082-8The gazetteer is listed in alphabetical order, giving the name (and any alternate names) of over 60 castles, together with the Ordnance Survey Map Number and 6-digit grid reference. The author provides a short description of each site and its history. A number of ground plans are included (very handy), but only 29 pictures (which I feel is the book's only weak point). Over 120 pages long, it does however, provide useful information for those wishing to visit the sites.

England. This book is a comprehensive guide to the history and architecture of around 150 sites (including a number of mottes) dating from the mid 11th century to the mid 16th century.
I wish I had had this book when I visited the area last year. It contains many photographs and plans along with the description of each site.
