Okay, so I understand that these are fantasy books, and, yes, they do include bountuous magic within the plotline. But Tamora Pierce reveals a plain view of young nobility (and later on, more mature nobility) in what is the fantasy realm of Tortall. Though these are for teenage readers and feature strong female heroines, they tell the truth about how women were shoved to the side and how one woman (In one of three quartets) dared to make a difference.
In more detail, she pretends she is a boy for eight years so that she can be a knight, though some people find out along the way, and there is one person in particular who she doesn't want to know her true sex, her best friend's charming--yet scandalous--cousin Roger. Also, she finds herself falling in love with the heir to the throne and one of the few who knows who she truely is.
The first quartet is called the Song of the Lioness, the books are like this:
Alanna; the first Adventure (innocent, with little to no gore or "mature content" as I tell my sister (9 years old) when she asks if she can read them)
In the Hand of the Goddess (my fav of all time!)
The Woman WHo RIdes LIke a Man (yes, bad title; good book)
Lioness Rampant (the grand finale!)
There are two more series in this world, called the Immortals Quartet and the Protector of the Smalll Quartet (still in progress). Happy reading!

All times are PT (US)
