I've seen the film, but have not read the book. Personally I prefer fact to fiction, though a novel built around factual events fits the bill nicely. The late Nigel Tranter remains a favourite, The Bruce Trilogy, or The Wallace the best amongst his 70 odd works of fiction. His factual books such as the five volumes of the Fortified House in Scotland aren't too bad either!

I've read the book and seen the movie, I find that when I read the book that is based on the movie, then I get a richer story line b/c sometimes there are things in the book that aren't in the movie and vice- versa. I'll have to try some of the books you've recommended, they sound interesting. I myself take the fact in with the fiction but of course I eventually sort it all out

It's a two edged sword, if you read the fact first, you can be over critical of the fiction for distorting the fact to suit the story, if you read the fiction first, you can be misled as to the truth. tranter's boks are excellent, though has had some of the sort of criticism of the type above, but his stories are not just confined to Scotland, although based there, his characters get about. In MacBeth ( who incidently was a real King, nothing like the Shakespeare play) the King even gets as far as Rome.
He did have a remarkable talent though, for painting medieval life as it was, pretty brutal. Sadly he died. Check out the rest of the Book Nook for more details.
