The Castellated and Domestic architecture of Scotland, 5 volumes, David McGibbon & Thomas Ross, facsimilie reprint James Thin Edinburgh gives a comprehensive view of Scttish Castle development within the context of Scotland as a European nation, ie there is discussion of styles from France and England with italian influences. For a British perspective only, try Plantagenet Somerset Fry, Castles of Britain and Ireland, David & Charles,ISBN 07153 0242 6 (castles developed differently in each of the home nations) try http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum9/HTML/000139.html http://www.castlewales.com/home.html http://www.castles-of-britain.com/index.htm http://www.roadstoruins.com/history1.html or the excellent http://www.manitoulin-link.com/medieval/castles.html Something to get you started!! ------------------ 'Give me the groves that lofty brave, The storms, by Castle Gordon'. Hi Moira, I think there are quite a few castle enthusiasts who struggle with this topic. Much of the material around is written from the British and French perspective. One book I can recommend is "Castles of Europe" by W. Anderson. Check out www.bibliofind.com if you want to buy a copy. One of the main differences I can think of is in the materials used. Even from very early times, fortifications in Northern Africa, Southern Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia were built from stone or brick, and if that was not available, mudbrick. In much of Central and Norhtern Europe castles were built of earthworks and timber until quite late(about the 11th century)as trees were large and common and stone was not always available. May I suggest you first rigidly define the term "castles" to narrow the scope of your research. Are you limited to particular countries or time? |

"Castles - their construction and history" by Sidney Toy (ISBN 0-486-24898-4) traces the history of castle construction from Roman times through to the Middle Ages and on to the chateau of the sixteenth century. The author uses examples from across Europe and the Middle East. The book includes lots of illustrations, and compares and contrasts style in a fairly scholarly manner rather than in the more 'general interest' approach of many more modern books. The book is also very reasonably priced! Levan |
