Once again Eliza, there are many. The primary reason for building on hilltops was usually defence, being able to watch over the surrounding countryside was probably just an added bonus. Here are some names of hilltop castles with significant pre 1500 structures which are still in use today and mostly intact; Neu-Bechburg, Burgdorf, Gryeres, Lenzburg, Lucens, Sargans and Valeria in Switzerland, Beseno and Rocca Majore in Italy, Karlstejn in the Chech Republic, Krak de Chevalier in Syria, Ajloun in Jordan and Alburquerque, Loarre and Penafiel in Spain. There are many more which are fairly intact, but I'm not sure of your definition of "in ruins", so those were the best of them. Erik |
