In tales about castles and stuf, you often hear/see someone is killed by hanging. Did the people actually did that sort of things? And when they did, did castles have their own gallow? ------------------ The world can be as you want, when you are as the world wants you. |

Yes they did. In Scotland many castles had their own gallows, usually a little distance away, and their position is often betrayed on modern maps by place names such as Gallowshill, or Gallowflat. These always occur around the major castles, unless the name has disappeared into the mists of time, however many smaller castles also had gallowhills if the lord there had power of 'pit and gallows', that is the right to hold court and act justiciar on his own property. Many minor lords, particularly in the unruly borders area took this power upon themselves, just to keep unwelcome visitors from England (and Scotland) under control!------------------ Demeure par la verite Visit my web-site at www.castlesontheweb.com/members/wurdsmiff/castles.htm Gordon.

I suppose it's also worth mentioning that this type of hanging was slow strangulation taking several minutes (as in Hang Em High) not the (usually) rapid judical hanging where the neck is broken. The body would often remain hanging until destoyed by carrion either on the noose or in a cage as a warning to others. There are numerous reports of heads of criminal and traitors being displayed on spikes at castle walls and town gates (Oliver Cromwell's head was reportedly displayed thus and he had to be disintered from his grave to get the head!)------------------ And the astronomyours beheldyne the constellacions of hys bryth by thare castle, and foundyn that he sholde bene wyse and curteyse, good of consaill Secreta Secretorum Visit Castellarium Philippis |

Castles had their own gallows if their lord had the privilege of high jurisdiction, also called 'Blutgerichtsbarkeit' (blood-jurisdiction) in german, meaning the right to decide about life and death. The gallow usualy was the be found an a hill not far from the castle. Three stones, once holding the gallow, can be seen on a hill, now covered with trees, just 200m west of the once mighty castle of Jörgenberg (now in ruins) in Switzerland. Sorry - I didn't take a picture when I was there and there's nothing on the net about it.Merlin |

true and excellent replies;but the hanging was actually grimmer-the subject was first disemballed, then had some of his guts burnt and only then was slowly hung. There was no drop either he was raised instead. |

I'm sure Glaive 203 meant disemboweled in his mail, though no doubt some folks were castrated too before the actual hanging. Sounds like you've been watching Braveheart again G.------------------ Demeure par la verite Visit my web-site at www.castlesontheweb.com/members/wurdsmiff/castles.htm Gordon.

Depends on your taste, it was very popular in Scotland since we saw the English get a hiding and it showed them up as a bad lot. The Scots also took a beating, but that didn't matter too much, since we won in the end! However don't rely on it for historical accuracy.------------------ Demeure par la verite Visit my web-site at www.castlesontheweb.com/members/wurdsmiff/castles.htm Gordon.

I watched braveheart only once when it first came out! I confess I'm a bad speller! My knowledge came from reading history not movies! |
