hi

in august or september i will go to denmark to do so castle hunting. i don't know much on danish castles or on denmark, except some 'standard' objects (www.slotte.dk), which we have on our huntinglist: kronborg, frederiksborg and christiansborg (especially the ruins of the medieval castle in the cellar).

so does some one have suggestions/ tips what are nice castles/ mansions to visit in denmark and what our good places from where you can visit them.

Ipflo,
If going to Denmark I would surely go the following castles. I haven't visited them myself but see them returning in several of my books and they look great.
- Vordingborg Castle, a 14th century castle on the southern tip of the island of Sjaelland. http://www.sns.dk/fortidsm/netpub/vordingborg/indhold.htm
(I'll send ya a internet 'postkort' I found)

- Hammershus Castle, a nice 13th century castle ruin on the island of Bornholm (maybe a little hard to reach, but worth the journey I think). http://www.sns.dk/fortidsm/netpub/hammershus/hammershus.htm

"But round about the castle there began to grow a hedge of thorns, which every year became higher...."

Just found another nice one; Kalo Castle, a 14th century castle ruin in the Djursland area (just northeast of Arhus). http://www.sns.dk/fortidsm/netpub/kaloe/indhold.htm

Also if you follow the text link, on the pages I've included, that start with 'Kort' you'll see a map of the region with several other castlesites indicated with names and symbols.
Have fun!

I have found another link to the castles in Danmark. I know these castles are maybe the famous ones in Danmark. I know there are a lot of castles in Danmark, maybe you can use a detailled map of Danmark and just looked around for castles.

thx for the info

vordingborg will probably be on the list

hammershus unfortunately not (we will be a few days around copenhagen/ sjaelland and a few days around kolding or odense)

yep, i already had in mind to buy a detailled map of denmark, it is often the best way to discover those small unknown pearls.

Denmark has very little left of the true castles, mostly minor ruins and some bits incorporated into later buildings. As you already know, there are some later palaces and country estates, mainly in Sjelland.
In the north of Sjelland there is the ruin of Gurre Slot, but very little to see.
If you're into history, I suggest you check out the museums in kopenhagan and the viking ship museum in Roskilde. One of the palaces, I forget it's name, has a very good and extensive art gallery(I spent 3 hours going through it).
While in Denmark you must eat a Flødebolle, and icecream served in freshly made waffle cones. I hope you enjoy the trip.

yes, i am discovering there aren't real 'good' old castles in denmark. so we probably will go for the royal palaces and the old castles, which have been transformed in mansions, like jaegerspris and aalholm, and in governments buildings, like koldinghus

the castle you mean is probably rosenborg or the frederiksborg.

that vikingshipmuseum is a good idea, thx

because we are also considering to visit a 'viking castle' Trelleborg on sjaelland (http://www.copenhagenpictures.dk/trlborg.html)

On the water beside the viking ship museum they have replicas sailing about, well they did last time I was there. I don't know if they take tourists out.

There is a very good viking exhibition at the national museum in kopenhagan.

Yeah, frederiksborg is the one.
