I am just back from portugal (to be exactly Lisbon, a city with nice palaces and castles in the neigboorhood ), you can also buy good castle books, there only in portuguese ;( (find God thx one in English, the book contained only three castles for the Algarve region) and very expensive.

I'm back from my Portugese holiday. I managed to visit 7 castles (Alcoutim, Castro Marim, Loulé, Mértola, Paderne, Silves and Tavira) and 3 forts in two weeks. All will appear on my website in the coming weeks at www.castles.nl.

I also visited Silves Castle which turned out to be an disappointment. It was totally turned into private houses. Just a very small corner of foundations and vestiges of two towers were nearly visible. Really not worth your time although it gets mentioned in almost all the holidayguides.

I was also able to get my hands on these books:
- "Castelos, Fortalezas e Torres da Região do Algarve", author V. Coutinho, published in 1997
- "Guias dos Castelos antigos de Portugal", volume 1 and 2, author CT. North, published by Bertrand Editoria in 2002
- "Portuguese Castles", part 1 in the Heritage Themes serie, published by the Instituto Portugués do Patrimonio Arquetectónico (IPPAR).
