I am taken by the Orsini castle at Vasanello, Italy. It was a defensive post but it was unusual in that it was on the flat. After the Papacy restored order again after the medieval period, this castle became a luxury dwelling -- and it still today retains the wall coverings (silk in summer, leather in winter) and some furniture too. While the family doesn't use it alot, it is still habitable and they come to hold parties for the people who have lived around the castle for 400 years. I have some pix of it and other castles on www.RomeCastles.com

There really are alot of castles in this area, and they are in remarkably good shape. I was surprised not to find more discussion of them anywhere.

Where exactly is it? In Rome itself? Or in the region around?

I found a nice website about castles in Lazio, the region around Rome: http://www.castellidelazio.com/indiceaz.htm

It mentions a Castello Savelli in Palombara Sabina: http://www.castellidelazio.com/castellodipalombarasabina.htm

That's a good question. I saw the reference to it in a book on European castles I read about ten years ago. Quoting
"The Savelli fortifications are on the Aventine next to Santa Sabina...they date from the 13th century...they consist of a wall with square towers enclosing the castrum where the Savelli family lived"

The ruins of Tintagel in Cornwall, UK.
The complete mystery surrounding the place. The crazy stairway to get up to it. Looking out over the cliffs to the beautiful blue waters of the Atlantic crashing on the rocky shoreline.
