![]() ![]() Is there anyway to get kids who ask questions in this forum to state their age. I may wish to reply but it is often difficult to judge a childs age from their characteristicly terse ( often to the point of rude) postings. Since I don't want to either patronise or befudel the child I usually just don't bother, I feel this may be the same for other potential contributers. Perhaps it would be possible to suggest, during the registration process, that new members who are want to put questions in this forum put their age in the question (Age, not grade, since grade means nothing to most English people). Perhaps it would also be possible to mention more generally to people that the more information they put in their questions the more likely they are to get a response. The ultimate example of vague was a few days ago when I was asked if I knew anything about castles. I could only reply that I did. I suspect the questioner wanted rather more than this but what I could not tell. ------------------

![]() ![]() Again I find myself in agreement. The questions on building models from pasta then offering up sugar cubes as a substitute displayed a characteristic naivety which leave the serious responder questioning themselves on the form of response. Whilst sympathising with the plight of younger school children who know little about the subject, and wishing to educate and stimulate an interest, it is often impossible from the question to establish at what level the answer should be aimed. An age included within the profile, (or at least a series of age ranges)would certainly help. I recently supplied very simplistic responses by mail to an individual who is a little more senior than I expected, and rapidly had to upgrade the level of data provided in order to avoid offence and give a worthwhile response. Whilst Castle Quest ranks members according to number of mailings, could we not use the term 'Junior' to mean just that, replacing the present usage with 'associate' or something in that vein. Older students could be known as 'intermediates', and an age ranking system avoid disclosure of data which would have to be updated on an annual basis. The more information given, the more can be returned, and if that supplied is on a personal level, then individual answers can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the enquirer. The only other alternative is for all mailings to include this voluntarily, and I envisage such having a poor response. [This message has been edited by wurdsmiff (edited 11-14-99).] |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have added a required field (Age) to the registration form. Now you should be able to check members profiles (Click on the little icon with the face on it that sits at the top of their message.) to see their age. I hope this helps. Drop me a line to let me know how it works out or if their are any problems. btw - Sorry for the delay in replying! ------------------ |

![]() ![]() Thanks Ted! Now I just have to work out what the various message icons are meant to mean. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't think that they're supposed to mean anything... just a bit of fun. ![]() [This message has been edited by TheScribe (edited 12-02-1999).] |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have had to disable the "Age" field because it is throwing the profiles off. Back to the drawing board... ![]() ------------------ |

![]() ![]() Ah well such is the life of a castle scribe ![]() As a little idea howabout replacing the term junior member with member (or nothing at all) and calling those amongst use with a few posting under our belts senior members (or some other such. Any suggestions out there?) thus reducing the implied age in the membership. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Done! - I have changed Junior Member to Member and the previous Member to Senior Member. I have also upped the criteria for Senior form 12 posts to 30. Let me know if suitable. ------------------ |
