![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Can a sub area in the booknook be created that would list by category, auther and isbn# the books given for reference by members? Can it be perminent like the Glossary? |

![]() ![]() This is a worthwhile idea but would need to be carefully organised if it was to be useful. Subdividing it into section with books for young children, older children, general guides, gazetteers etc. would allow users to make find what they where looking for. Also, if the books where all on the same page, or in a searchable form. I have tried to do something of this sort on my site at http://www.castlesontheweb.com/members/philipdavis/Books/biblo.html but this is really a biblography for my site so has few general texts and almost no childrens texts. Also I'm not to sure if the giving the tiltle and a link to a review, ISBN etc really is the best way to present the information. ------------------ |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I think this is a great idea, though I don't have the time for such a grand undertaking. The opportunity is yours. ![]() ------------------ |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Perhaps a relatively straight-forward approach would be to start a discussion thread for each major book category to which folks can add new books, with the relevant information, as they are discovered. This could include the title, author, ISBN, price (use one's own local currency - let the rest work it out!), availability together with a brief review. Categories need only be set up when/if recommended books do not easily fit into categories already listed. The main thing to do to keep the listings useable is to make sure one views postings from earlier periods! Some categories to get things started might include: In a simillar vein, like Philip, I too have seen the need for a book resource and have been promising for some time to include one on my website - just not got round to it yet. I've asked a friend to build an ASP-based (Active Server Page) site that would allow me simply to publish book reviews via an easy-to-use database; the result should be fully searchable. When can it go live - we'll have to wait and see. Levan |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Just remembered, for general castle book listings, there is always the following site: http://www.castlesontheweb.com/search/Castle_Books/ They're not categorised, but there is a facility to see how others have reviewed the book (I'd use this as a starting point then see if there are reviews on sites like Amazon or Barnes and Noble). ![]() ![]() I don't think my html is up to anything as grand as an ASP, but I might suprise myself. Actually though, having looked at Castle Book Nook I'm now wondering if another site is really needed. What do others think? I was anyway thinking of linking to either B&N or Amazon where possible (realising that not all books are still in print). Really I was just thinking of extending my existing biblography with a few slight changes. Would this be worthwhile? ------------------ |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I like Levans idea of the straight forward approach, and if modifing or adding to a site works then that should make things easier. I'm glad that someone else will take this job, for I can't find the time to work on my own web site. |

![]() ![]() I also prefer Levan's idea of using the book Nook and opening up a category for each subject as required. I actually had always thought of the Nook as having been supplied for that purpose, although undeveloped. What if some poor volunteer took over the book nook as moderator, with a free hand to open up the different categories and edit and organize the entries. Ted could add an explanation as an overview at the top of the Forum Index page, and the moderator could copy and move reviews to place in appropriate categories. Everyone else would obviously be able to add in their own reviews and topics, but the moderator could be the person responsible for the sorting out. Initially this could be a lot of work, though by borrowing reviews from our own websites and those freely available a substantial 'library' could be built up. If for example more than one review was posted for the same book, an quick copy could be made of the second post, added by edit to the first, and the old mail deleted. This way all items on the same subject could be kept together. We could have a single topic open for members comments, from which the moderator could use the same edit process to sort acording to their own taste. ------------------ Gordon. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm all for the way you detailed it Gordon, really good ideas guys. Now who can we get to volunteer? |

![]() ![]() I have some concerns as to how book nook would cope/be usuable with a few hundred entries. Even if subdidvided some sections could have scores of entries. A user wanting to find a book would have to enter the forum, decide which sub forum to enter, and the enter several book reviews, returning to the subforumpage each time. Would this be practible? ------------------ |

![]() ![]() A fair point, some of that problem could be overcome by very clear detailing of what each topic contains, and providing numerous headings. It would be more ideal if we had another level of categorisation provided by the current set up. The problem arises that some books could easily be placed in more than one category, solved by a 'general ' section. Volume may be a problem whichever way it is tackled. As regards the initial setup, I don't think the initial volume of work can be avoided, perhaps sharing the load may be an answer, all I can suggest is that we have plenty of time. There is no deadline, this is something that could be built up slowly. ------------------ 'Give me the groves that lofty brave, The storms, by Castle Gordon'. ![]() ![]() Don't think I'd be the best person to review other folks work, sorry. Will fully support anyone else who wishes to tackle this. Philip? Levan? Both of you seem to have a fair idea of what is required, I'm sure either or both of you would make a good job of it provided you have the time. ------------------ Gordon. |

![]() ![]() I certainly wasn't thinking of myself as some offical critic. I was more thinking of a site where recomended books could be easily found and the details needed for getting the book obtained. I think for the moment I might just expand my own biblography but mention it only when asked. ------------------ |
