![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but sometimes when I post a reply it takes several days to appear or it may not appear at all. Usually it appears straight away. Currently I am waiting for my reply to "Fiera di Primiero" in "Individual Castles", which I posted a couple of days ago. Four replies a indicated, but only three appear. I don't think the problem is due to cacheing, as I can view new topics in other sections. Any ideas? Erik [This message has been edited by Erik Schmidt (edited 10-13-2000).] |

![]() ![]() Erik, sorry you are having problems. I personally have no problem with delays, though I have had several problems in the past with a variety of things. I read your reply when it came in, and it is still there. It was displayed punctually as far as I can tell. This sounds like a browser problem to me, though alternatively be to do with cookies. I would advise you to check your browser settings. It is possible to set the frequency at which web pages are refreshed by your browser. If you have them to set infrequently, it is possible that you are viewing the replies page as stored on your own hard disk. On the main page with the number of replies the data is stored as cookies, and so as you reply the cookie on your hard drive would automatically display your latest post. However if I am right, you will not see your reply until your browser refreshes the latest version of the reply page. Try hitting the refresh button when next viewing the page, and reset your internet preferences to download the latest version of the page at every visit. If this is what you mean by cacheing and it doesn't work, then try going into preferences, clearing all cookies loaded by this utility (you'll lose the lightbulbs at next visit) and on subsequent visits you may find a difference. In doing this you will return to default preferences, and will have to reset. Let me know how you get on. ------------------ Demeure par la verite - Mason family motto. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks Gordon, I went through and deleted the Castles cookies and it seems to have worked for now, although I forgot to check if it was already fixed prior to deleting them. I don't think it's a problem with the browser not refreshing often enough, as presssing the refresh button doesn't help. We've had this problem before with other sites and I think it may be due to cacheing. What I mean by that is that some internet "providers" out there store web pages on their systems and only update them periodically to save phone costs, so if someone is doing that between my computer and the Castles on the Web computer, I can only get the updated pages after they update them. Thanks for your help. I'll see how I go with this reply. Erik |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You're right about some ISPs caching web-pages - I changed mine some time ago for that reason. This can be a particular problem with ISPs that use a proxy server, as these are invariably cached. I use a counter on my website that provides a wide range of statistics about where my hits are coming from - these clearly demonstrates that some bigname ISPs are caching my site. The plus side of ISP-caching is that using a cache when accessing fairly common and static websites can bring about a huge improvement in performance - not good for sites with dynamic content! It does, none-the-less surprise me that ISPs are still using caching technologies that are quite so slow to update - it shouldn't really be that much a problem nowadays. Some ISPs enable you to set up Proxy settings manually, if this is the case, you might well be able to disable it. Levan [This message has been edited by Levan (edited 10-15-2000).] |

![]() ![]() Unless cacheing is being carried out on our pages individually, I am inclined to think that this isn't your problem. You said you were able to view new replies in other sections, a fractionalised approach seems unlikely from an ISP dealing with thousands of sites. Hopefully the cookie thing has sorted it out. ------------------ Gordon. |
