I'm interested in purchasing a castle in my local area, what are some good resources for interior renovations, such as paint and stencil/mural choices as well as overall renovation information. Thanks! |

The ceilings at Castle Levan were re-interpretations of mediaeval styles and themes found at other contemporay buildings in the area such as Traquair House. The artist we used was Norman Edgar (a former senior lecturer at Glasgow school of art). Norman Edgar is based in Gourock, Scotland. It's perfectly possible to create your colours and pigments using natural materials in the traditional way. There are a number of books you can buy that show examples of mediaeval wall and ceiling paintings. In particular, I suggest you look at "The painted ceilings of Scotland, 1550-1650" by M. R Apted. and borrow "English Mediaeval Wall Painting" by Ernest William Tristram, Monica Bardswell (it's very expensive). There is also a book with a similar title that I found in Haddon Hall (Derbyshire) but unfortunately I can't remember it's title (it was a reasonably priced soft-back though). Levan | |
