Does anyone play Gemstone 3? It's a text-based RPG game set in Medieval times, that's played online.

I'm afraid not me. But I do enjoy the odd RPG, my favourite being Fallout which is not medieval and not text based. I find most of the medieval themed games a bit irksome since the history is wrong in a manner that is just lazy rather than to make the game more interesting or accessable - Games based on the Roman period seem to suffer much less from this, so I know it's just laziness on the programmers part. Castles siege and conquest does try harder with the history but its a dull game.

Gemstone 3 is based in a fantasy-world called Elanthia. It has magic, Medieval weapons, and monsters. Though nothing like the real Middle Ages, it is based in that time period. It's also has rules against talking about modern times and technologies.

Most of the time it's all about how gory and gruesome it is, but there are some exceptions.
My favorite is Might and Magic 1 and 2. Though about 6 to 7 years old, it has some good graphics.

Heroes of Might and Magic II I've got, quite enjoyably. The latest RPG I've been playing is Nethergate, based in Roman occupied Britain, doesn't stop it having magic and elves though. It's a bit of a shame that the middle ages are so tied up with peoples ideas about magic. Fallout was a good RPG with no magic, I could well imagine so great medieval RPG's based on real medieval situations; The Crusades, the spanish reconquesta, the rise of the Godwins in anglo-saxon england, William Marshall etc.

I've never tried playing anything online. Until recently I've had to pay for the time I was online so the cost put it out of the question. Does it really work on ordinary telephone lines or is everything too slow to be worthwhile?

Yes, it can be played on an ordinary phoneline. But it does cost $10 a month.

All times are PT (US)
