Hi. A few of you started chatting about fantasy books so I thought I'd open up the topic. I've read JRR Tolkein "Hobbit", "Lord of the Rings" a long time ago. My favourite series was David Eddings "Belgariad" and "Mallorean" - although we're now told they were written in conjunction with his brother Leigh. His "Elenium" and "Tamuli" series were quite different - with a more religious undertone. Am finding the prequels to the Belgariad a bit laborious - not enough castles perhaps??!! ; ) I've also immensely enjoyed Raymond E. Feist's "Riftwar" saga especially his very first "Magician". I'm yet to read the latest in his "Serpentwar" Saga. Also found Terry Brooks' Shannara series a good read. Have heard Terry Pratchett is funny. Hope some people can share some of their favourite books / series. I haven't read much fantasy for a while...seem to have gone off it for a bit but would like to perhaps get back into it. |

My 2 Fave at the moment would be Dragon Lance series. Expesaly the ones written by: Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. And Tales of Redwall all written by: Brian Jacques. |

I found myself unable to read any other fantasy books with ufn after reading the lord f the rings, they are all far less in my opinion...------------------

Back in the mid 80's a Simon Hawke published a series of books called
'The Time Wars'
Each set in its own time period. One of the best was ' The Zenda Vandetta'. Plenty of castles in that one.
Perhaps hard to find now but a good read.

Gives me some ideas.KnightsHonor - if I remember rightly there are heaps of books in the DragonLance series??and do you need to read them in order to get the best out of them? Fox - I'd have to agree with you that LOTR sets the tone for fantasy writing and is hard to beat. Still, Feist and Eddings have a unique way of writing - quite humorous actually. Have you read "Magician?"

You don't have to read every book in order, for the most part each starts it's own new story, however there are Sagas within the series, it's best to start with the first book of a saga for the best overall reading.I've only read two books out of the series, and both from diferent sagas, but I find each book is just as good as a stand alone as in a series. |

I just finshed the Dragonlance Chronicles Trilogy. I highly recomend!the first book was ausome, the second was a litle bit downhill, but the third, though sad and not quite the ending you'd expect is still a very very well writtin book. they are all well writtin for that matter. anyway just thought I'd let you all know about these books. I found "The Hobbit" an interesting read (when I was 14), but found the LOTR sophoric.
I haven't a Discworld novel for a couple of years, but enjoyed their frantic pace.
David Edding's repetitive books, amused me intially but after the Belgariad they began to grate. As did the Hickman/Weiss Mormon inspired Dragonlance series.
Possibly the best fantasy books that I have read, (a number of times each), would be Jack Vance's "Dying Earth" books and Michael Moorcock's "Elric" series. |

I find Hickman/Weiss to be very talented writers, their earliest novels in the DragonLance series, more so I think than their newer novels. They captured a certain humanity in the characters, a depth in each one, that many authors miss in their writing.
They sometimes can begin to become grating in certan aspects but over all there worth the reading.  ------------------
