Mikel, I small article in Postern 4 (1994) had this on Coral Castle: " If we are looking for something a little more up to date, we have to look no further than the strange castle that is built out of native coral. Coral Castle isn't really a castle , but a group pf objects built on rock indigenous to the area, astounding because of their size and weight. This strange group of objects includes - Tjhe Polaris Telescope, perfectly focused on the North Star, the telescope stands some 25ft high and weighs almost 30 tonnes. The man responsible for all this work is Ed Leedskalnin, left his native Latvia at the age of 26. It is said that he was jilted the night before his wedding by his former 16-year old fiancee Agnes. Ed, then took 28 years to construct his Coral Castle in Homestead, it also took 1,100 tonnes of coral. And although some of the blocks weighed upwards of 30 tonnes each, he moved them all by himself, using only handmade tools of his own design. The 'tribute' to Agnes also includes a 5,000Ib rocking throne, a nine-tonne gate measuring 80" x 92" x 21"; so perfectly mounted and balanced it opens with a touch of one finger ! " It's all here, on CastlesontheWeb ! | |
