Does some one know where i could find (more) information on the history and picturs of the castle of Erlaa.The only thing i know is that Erlaa lies in the vicinity of Vienna. That it was built around 1770 by the prince of Starhemberg and that it was designed by the architect Andreas Zach. One of the later owners was duke Elinar of Oldenburg. More i don't know, does the castle still exists, was it a big or little castle, how does it look? thx in advance |

Hi Ipflo,I have found some information about a castle Erla in Austria. I have only a text in German language. It's a pity their was no picture in that book. Erla, östlich Enns, Niederösterreich. Als 1835 der seit 1782 vom Religionsfonds verwaltete Besitz der Benediktinerabtei Erla – sie war 1130 gegründet worden – in private Hand kam, gestaltete man das Konventgebäude, einen Vierflügelbau um einen Hof mit dem ehemaligen Kreuzgang, schloßartig um. Die Trakte mit einsigem Kapitelsaal und Nonnenchor zeigen z.T. noch Architektur des 16. Jh. Südlich des Schlosses liegen die ehemaligen Wirtschaftsgebäude. yep, i think this is the castle, i recognize the style of the architect, it very much resembles rohrau castle.thx very much ------------------

Again from the book I acquired in Austria comes the following text about Schloss Erlaa.
"A square building with sidewings, which encloses a large yard. To both sides of the main front a staircase leads to the first floor. In the center section of the Schloss is a large garden hall with marble and a stucco ceiling. From here one arrives over an outside staircase into the generously layed out park. In this park are an observation tower, an artificial cave, a glasshouse, ponds, statues (Apollo, Lorelei, Neptun and Atlas) as well as an artificial ruin. An eight row chestnut avenue leads to the Breitenfurter road. The Schloss is first mentioned in documents in 1114 and 1170; in 1242 it is mentioned under Hartung of Erlaa. The localities Erlaa and Atzgersdorf formed at that time a basic rule. After the destruction by the Turks (1683) the Schloss was rebuild in the large park. Under Elimar, duke of Oldenburg further change took place. | |
