Topic: 15th Century Town

Is their anyway I could get a plan (or possibly an artists rendering) of a 15th century that centered around a castle-one in which the walls were filled with shops and farms surrounded the structure (probably one started by a lord that centered around a market-i suppose this would be a manor???). If you can make sense of what i've written any reply would be fine. ------------------

book I mentioned in the Welsh castles book list .. this is Alan Sorrell's small book 'Early Wales Re-created', National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, ISBN 0 7200 02281 from 1980:
Not only did Alan paint & draw pictures showing how Roman & Medieval castles looked , he drew in the town or houses that surrounded them.
Well worth trying to find if you can. Not quite 80-pages, but full of detail. |

Alan Sorell was a favourite of my youth too, but his dramatic pictures aren't always the most historically accurate. They are very good but some of the newer illustrator like Terry Ball and Chris Jones-Jenkins are, in my opinion, better.
My advice to you is to but the CADW guide to Conwy castle, this has some excellent illustration of the castle and town including an artistic impression of the town in the early 14C by Ivan Lapper. It's actually very cheap at less than three pounds sterling and packed full of great information and illustrations, including illustrations from all four of the illustrators mentioned above.You can get this guide, along with similer ones of Caernarfon and Denbigh (both with impressions of the medieval town attached to the castle), from CADW (Welsh Historic Monuments) but only by phone (see Scriptorium ) You will be able to get the details of the book there though (ISBN's etc.) Amazon.co.uk has the Conwy book available for immediate delivery, but Amazon.com doesn't but search around ------------------

Oh and it does have a plan of the town from about 1600 in it as well (Two actually a modern one and a contemporary one - I said it was packed with stuff) |

I agree with the stuff about Conwy. Other example English towns you might like to consider include Ludlow and Lincoln.In Scotland, both Edinburgh and Striling provide excellent examples of towns that have grown around a castle (although these are quite distinctively Scottish in character). Levan
