Hi everyone,I'm wondering if one of you castle cognoscenti can answer a question I have: In a medieval castle, what was the order in which different parts were built? Where would they have started construction? To put it otherwise, if you started to build a castle and stopped halfway - what buildings would be left standing? Thanks! This is for a book I'm writing, so I'd be really grateful for any thoughts. -Tom |

Many castles have been built in many different ways. Though one might say a typical series of buildings works would be to consolidate the site first. Normally a ditch and some type of fence. While this was going on a wooden tower might be built. This tower might be built in stone to start with. When this had reached a certain stage, the pallisade would be replace in stone. There would be a simple entrance, then this also expanded on. The original tower might be the entrance, as at Richmond. Then a new gateway started by the side. So a castle that was never finished might consist of ditches only (wooden sections rotted away), with seemingly ruined/unfinished tower within. Mix it as you want. Peter | |
