when/why did they start putting cones on top of turrents?

The 'cone' is of course just the roof.
And would only be suitable for a round tower or turret, otherwhise a square or oblong tower would have something in the shape of an upturned rowing boat. You see this kind of roof on windmills.
How long ... from as long as a roof was needed.
