Author Topic:   Masonry Experience Reqd? Rick Member posted 07-19-99 10:22 AM             This site is great! After reading several of the posts I no longer think my dream of one day building my own castle is impossible. Although I still have several questions. For those of you building with real stone and doing all/most of the work yourselves, are you stone masons by trade? If not then how does the average person learn how to cut and place stone without taking a couple years off to do a masonry apprenticeship? It's not exactly the kind of skill you can learn by taking a class at your local community college. Also, again for those using real stone, how big on average are the blocks you are using? I would think that using huge ones like they did in the old world would be cost prohibitive as well as too difficult to handle without heavy equipment. Finally regarding the cost, when I think of natural stone I immediately think "very expensive", but maybe that's because I'm thinking about the cost of using highly polished marble or granite that people use for bathrooms and kitchen countertops. I would like to believe that rough-cut granite or limestone (or whatever) is not prohibitively expensive as a building material for the walls. If anyone could give me any information on any of these questions I would appreciate it. At this early stage I am trying to get a handle on the skills/logistics/$ involved in building a castle of my own. Thanks! I didn't have any background in masionary but talking to people here, I learned a lot and where to look. The stone I'm useing is limestone (crused) the stones range any where from baseball size to say 300pound very time consumeing. Got to place them like a gig saw puzzle. But looks very good. Hope you got a place to put it all then you got to sort through it all. Started on a fence to get the hang of it at first and get the look I was looking for. Its really not all that hard just time consumeing. Should get it done say in 10 or 15 years if my back don't give out. If you have any more questions drop me a e-mail.
