Topic: Castle interior ideas needed!

HELP!! For my crazy husbands sake. I am trying to turn our tiny country style home into a castle, on the interior at least since city prevents me from doing much to the outside. I am looking for any ideas or suggestions on how this may be possible.

I'm not that good about upgrading interiors but there are a few good ideas in DANCING DRAGONS, and this web site http://www.museumreplicas.com. You might go through the other posts at this site and maybe something will fit your needs.

I agree with you, things can be done cheaper and most times better when you do it your self. With a little thought alot of details that would be left out becouse of cost can be put in to your home design. The decorating is actually coming rather well. I wanted stone castle type walls, so we took 75 pounds of plaster and covered the main inside wall in the home with it wrapping around the corners of the wall 6 inches to give it a more realistic effect. We then outlined rocks by scraping off plaster to create grout lines. After it dried we painted it dark grey, then we sponged black and white on it and then glazed the entire thing so the colors would blend. Presto, a couple of weeks, less than $50 and I have a faux rock wall that everyone thinks is real. We hung torches on it and are currently looking for a dragon sheild for the middle. I am slowly filling the house with dark wood furniture with lion carvings. I also put lion head knobs on all the cabinets. I added a pedestal with a dragon wrapped around it in front of the fireplace and there are dragons of every size and shape everywhere you look. I hung tapestries (with dragons of course) on the wall in the hallways. I tore out the gardens in the front and back and created raised gardens with rock retaining walls. I added many gargoyles including a six foot gargoyle fountain, a gazing ball on a medieval pedestal and a rose garden that has rocks surrounding the plants (helps keep weeds down) in the front yard. The only problem is, my neighbors do not like the castle effect and think the we must be the strangest people they have ever met. My husband wants to put throne chairs in front of our rock wall, but I have yet to find them for less than $1500 apiece. If anyone has any idea where I could aquire them for less, please let me know. |

Very creative fix on the wall useing plaster and paint. Alot cheaper then haveing it done in real stone and less of a mess to clean up. I have no idea of where to get throne chairs, other than finding a craftsman who is willing to convert a standard type wood chair by adding something.
I can't see what your neighbors find wrong with a raised garden or with your taste in haveing the look of a castle for your home. I sell a alot of garden dragons and other metal work to people that would agree with what you have done. Those of us who like castles do not think it strange at all to want to live in one. Merry Meet All!!! Just a little update and Thanks!!! The interance way is about 95% complete all we like is the inter walls. Then the tower starts to go up. Just read about your idea for the inside wall Dragon Clan thanks it just gave me the idea for a little wall that joins the interance way and the main building outside. I think Stucko will have to be implemented on that spot since it is on a outside wall and high up. |

We have a little outside wall also, and after many discussions with various builders, one of them suggested faux rocks for outside walls. They are made of concrete, although one would never guess and come in all shapes and sizes so you can pretty much pick out any type of rock you like. They can just be set in concrete onto the wall and are relatively cheap and readily available at most building supply stores. They had a little too much depth for inside walls (about 2-3" thick) as we wanted to keep what little space we have, but we are going to use them on our little entranceway wall. We are also comtemplating using them on the house's exterior, starting at the foundation and going up a foot or two as this is where the stucco is starting to wear off. We were advised that this was an acceptable location for them also. |
