I have just bought a property in west central Victoria, Australia. It is at the foot of a mountain and is quite lush.
Now I have this boyhood dream to live in a castle. But not all dreams can come true right. So I leveled with myself and decided with my partner that we would bulid a formal dinig room / entertainment area. There is no buildings on the property and is about an acre in size. What I'm after is some good ideas on how to go about things. I'm 23 years old and have plenty of time for a good project. The house I'm going to build won't be of castle design but will be small like a holiday cottage.
Can any body help me get started.. ie. Some examples of oter peoples plans or photos. What I need to know, the good the bad points of stone buildings etc etc..Oh and just a quick one.. Where can I find a place that I can order family quilts. I'm after the quilt of the clan Macleod of Lewis.. www.dunvegancastle.com

Cheers...... Daniel Stoll

This will not be much help, have a look through this forum for ideas and sites that might fit your needs and i have no idea where to find the quilt your looking for. You might have some one in your area make it for you.
I do know a place to buy specialized hand woven fabrics and i've latly heard of a company that makes Tarten carpets.
As for the building with stone, that subject has been covered in depth in this forum and others on this site, the one thing that stands out on this type of construction is its cost of labor.
The best of luck with your dream.

I've heard of family quilts, though not in the context you suggest. The idea behind what you are looking for is similar to that of the tartan where a particular pattern and colour scheme is associated with your surname. The quilt idea is quite different in that mothers would sew together any available pieces of fabric in order to create a warm and attractive bed cover for their daughter's marriage bed. Unless some entrepreneurial character has combined the two ideas then I suspect you will be disappointed.
I personally am a little cynical about the Tartan philosophy, although it does help this country maintain a healthy balance of payments. The tartans (even those listed as ancient) and 'Highland dress' are generally victorian inventions, and original tartans bear no resemblance to what is now available, as with the costume design which again is a much over elaborated representation of the original. Many of us now use Highland dress at formal occasions such as weddings to give them a Scottish flavour, and although very nice, only core elements betray the original dress. Much of the development took place under the auspices of military uniform from the 17thc, then were developed as romantic fashions by the victorians. You can now purchase tartan associated with such modern themes as soccer (fitba') teams and even the millenium. Hardly traditional sources.

I'm a little more than cynical about tartan carpet or tartan covered hamburgers, or even cookies, although i do like that brand of shortbread. It isn't hard to search for and find the real items that the fakes pretend to be. It may take some time but it's worth it.
