I am interested in building a home designed like a castle. I am having trouble finding information regarding architecture. Can anyone give me some websites or other resources? |

You will find some plans and drawings on my web site linked below. there are also plans on Philip's site, and Levan's. http://www.castlesontheweb.com/members/philipdavis/index.html http://fp.kirkburn.f9.co.uk/castlelevan/ though I'm not sure if any of these are what you're looking for. For architectural detail, there is a selection of photographs in the Photo Archive linked at the bottom of the page, search the miscellaneous category. There are also a small number of floorplans available in the Photo Archive, under their own category. The following site gives drawings of various items of military architecture, http://www.angelfire.com/wy/svenskildbiter/drawings.html Hope all this is useful. ------------------ Demeure par la verite Visit my revised web-site at www.castlesontheweb.com/members/wurdsmiff/castles.htm Gordon.

If you can give examples of what you might be looking for,say an arched window, crowstepped gable, or an item of the interior maybe we can be of even more assistence. ------------------ Megan and Ralph CASTLE DUNCAN
If you have built castles in the air your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put foundations under them. H.D.Thoreau [This message has been edited by duncan (edited 03-23-2001).] |

Thankyou for the links. They were most helpful. I guess I would like more information on drawbridges and how I could incorporate it into a modern home. I had toy-ed with the idea of having a working drawbridge as a garage door. |

A while ago I did an extensive search of the web for detailed illustrations of the working of a drawbridge and found nothing. It may be there is something now but in the end I sure you'll end up wanting a bit more detail. I'd recommend Sidney Toy's Castles Their Construction and History still in print and easy to get. Most drawbridges need a fair amount of space above and behind them to work properly so unless you've a particularly large garage you might find this difficult.------------------ And the astronomyours beheldyne the constellacions of hys bryth by thare castle, and foundyn that he sholde bene wyse and curteyse, good of consaill Secreta Secretorum Visit Castellarium Philippis

A very well illustrated and 'simple' draw brige can be found on page 219 ofMarten Coventry's Castles of Scotland Third Edition Deluxe published by Goblinshead isbn 1-899874-27-5 The picture is of Fort George's water crossing. A simple Cross bar on two uprights with levers hinged on the bar and counter weighted to the back side. I beleave this design could be incorperated in an allready existing house with no real problems and the cost of the materal would be low.
