Hello I am new here. I am having trouble finding the right builder. I started to buy an already built castle for 2.5 mil. but I wanted to build my own because I could not find one the exact way I wanted it. I know how I want the outside. I want fieldstone for the outside walls. Also, round towers on each corner. I am wanting at least (3) three levels.
For the inside walls I want to use the spray on fome insulation behind cedar walls, is this possible? Any help will be great. Comments are also welcome.

Your local trade unions can help you locate a builder and finding an architect is simple as looking in a phone book.
Your discription of your desires will have to be much more pricise and No one can do that for you but your self if your at all serious.
By the way, at what school does a teacher make enough money to afford a 2.5 mill castle?

Thank you for your reply duncan. It was helpful. I have looked in the phone book for an architect, although there are not many of good standing. I do apologize for not listing all of my occupations, I did not know they were of importance. I have updated my profile.
I am very serious about my castle I have already built a small model. Although, like I said before I am not sure how I want to start the inside. I thought I could get ideas from this site. I am open to any suggestion.

Yes this forum is for building your own castle wether it is a facsimile or the real thing. However sometimes we have kids that confuse it with the School Projects forum.
The people here are invovled with real construction projects and more often then not are doing the work them selfs.
A builder as well as an architect comes under many state and local laws and as such are hard to give a reference to from one locality to another, thats why i suggested the phone book and trade unions.
For ideas, this whole forum is full of everthing from ancient to new untried concepts. Set your browser to all and enjoy reading.
Spray on foam insulation is also covered but i think the Ceder used as the walls is a new one.
What kind of framing will you be useing?

Drakor,
A note about the insulation, and any other synthetics used in the building, is that they give off solvent fumes. If you're after a "real" castle feel(and your health), you may not want the place smelling like a paint worshop for years after.
I have no experience with the kind of insulaion you mention, but it might be worth taking a smell around a building with it installed. I guess it depends on just how authentic you want it to be.
Have you thought about double walls, the space filled with an expanded clay insulation or similar, as is done with brick buildings?

Just a small point that may be of some interest.
I work for one builder where we build wooden frame design houses. Very nice and very expensive. As you can imagine these are very well insulated, and their heat retention is great. Brick is used on the outside of this shell to give different design effects, and also add to that insulation.
It has been proven (so the fittings teams tell me), that the sheet fibre-glass type insulation they use is best. This is packed everywhere, then covered by a heavy plastic membrane, then half-inch plasterboard. On top of which anything can be fixed. From a simple sealer finish to wood cladding.
From an electrical\plumbing point of view .. everything that may be needed in a property of this build must go in first.
Because believe me .. it's hell to add and alter items later on .. I know !
Yours, a sometimes very itchy electrician.
ps.
and there aint no smells.

Here in the states the builders haven't used double brick walls since somewhere in the mid 30s and i can not tell you why or any good reasons that is. I'm sure there is some where that brick has been used in that way but for the most part that type of construction has ended.
Spray foam was used in many buildings but has decreased due to the smell and health problems. Don't confuse this with spray batting.
Sheet insulation that comes in large rolls of any size needed is now the major type used in large open area construction.
Im not familiar with the clay insulation you spoke of Erick, can you tell us more about it?

Duncan,
That insulation I talked about was used in Denmark many years ago when I lived there. Called LECA.
It's still around. Here are a couple of web sites; http://members.tripod.com/~fukungtw/leca.htm
http://www.leca.dk/engelsk/lecas-verden/lecas-verden.html

The double brick I refer to is from an old building in Denmark, I don't know if it is still used. I can imagine cheaper alternatives to double brick are being used.

Peter sorry to confuse you. I think you will have the same stuff there just under a different name. Here its used in craw spaces, attics, to fill a prexisting wall and or to bring up the R values in an older home.
Small light weight peices of a gray manmade material is pumped through a large hand held hose into the needed areas.
Erik thanks for the site and info for the LECA. I'm looking into a source here or if it is even imported.

Thank you all, for the info. It gives me something to think about running by my builder. He has the "old ways" of building on his mind. At least, that is what he tells me. All of your replys are grand. Thank you again. I will keep you-all posted on how the construction is going.

Got you ..
... not that horrible stuff that gets in my hair, under my cuffs, makes me scratch all over .. yuek !
Glad to say it has gone out of fashion somewhat over here. The only spray stuff that is really used now is the expanding foam for in walls. But even that is now frowned on as restricting airflow.
