So, are you after ideas about owning a castle, or just some ideas on dreaming? One idea, don't drool on the library books. It tends to ruin the pictures! Welcome to castle fanatics inc. May your dreams be realized. Erik |

I think it should be said that any plans of any castle are pretty useless for modern day building. Though they should be studied to formulate ideas. One should bring in several other items into any ideas from those plans; where your site will be (including cost), what local regulations will allow (many have come unstuck here), your 'total' building costs. Even how long you are prepared to live rough whilst building. One avenue that is often overlooked is the conversion of existing buildings into a suitable structure. I know several people that have converted large barns or solid cottages (two & one story) into castle-like structures. For where there is an existing building you have the advantage of just that. An alteration to an existing building rather that a new build. It can also have the advantage, if the structure is semi-sound, of storing, and perhaps living in a section of it. Going way off the beaten track. I know of one couple who have taken out a 20-year lease on a very solid barn structure, on the isle of Gozo (just off Malta). For the last 7\8 years they have gone there for 2-weeks and 1-week every year. Building, working, and enjoying themselves in the sun. Okay, this isn't feasible for most of us. But do try a different tack of thinking sometimes. Might get you to where you want a bit quicker .. and cheaper. | |
