The town of Campobasso still has a castle situated on top of the hill which the town surrounds. The castle goes by the name of Castello Monforte. The original castle is said to date from the 9th century, in the period of "longobardo" according to sources. This castle suffered earthquake damage in 1349 and (1546 or 1456) and was subsequently rebuilt and expanded by, and taking it's name from, Nicola of Monforte. It is listed as a tourist attraction/monument and there are some pictures of it on various sites, so the 2 world wars didn't wipe that one out. Hope it helps, Erik |
